We are pleased to invite you to a New Teacher “Learning About the BCTF and KCTU” SURT Workshop, taking place via Zoom on the upcoming District Pro-D Day, Friday, May 15, 2026, from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.
This workshop is designed for new teachers with fewer than five years of experience in our district, including both TTOCs and contract teachers. The session will provide an overview of the British Columbia Teachers’ Federation (BCTF) and the Kootenay Columbia Teachers’ Union (KCTU), including:
- Services and supports available to members
- Local issues and opportunities for member engagement
- Key elements of the newly-ratified collective agreement
- Professional development opportunities
- The KCTU TTOC Mentorship Program
- Professional challenges and available supports
- Health and safety rights
TTOCs and contract teachers who would not be paid for the morning of May 15, 2026 if it was a regular work day and are not registered for the regular District ProD Day offerings, who attend the workshop will be paid for 0.5 FTE (half-day). This amounts to $224 (based on the average daily TTOC rate of $448 ÷ 2).
Payment will be provided by the KCTU and billed to the KCTU SURT budget, in accordance with the membership resolution passed at the February 4, 2026, KCTU General Meeting:
To accept the KCTU Pro-D Committee recommendation to proceed with planning for a half-day BCTF New Teacher SURT in 2025/2026, with enrollment capped at $19,140 on a first-come, first-served basis.
The $19,140 represents the full allocation of the annual KCTU SURT budget for the 2025/2026 school year and reflects our memberships’ commitment to supporting our newest and least experienced members.
Please note that space and funding are limited. Registration will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis, with priority given to TTOCs and new contract teachers with fewer than five years of experience in our district. We encourage you to register as soon as possible.
