What Is a Collective Agreement?
A collective agreement is a legally binding contract between teachers and the school district, negotiated and enforced by the teachers’ union. It sets out the terms and conditions of teachers’ employment and ensures that rights, responsibilities, and working conditions are clearly defined and protected.
For teachers, the collective agreement covers areas such as salary and benefits, workload and preparation time, class size and composition, leaves, seniority and job security, health and safety protections, and processes for addressing concerns or disputes. Once ratified, both the district and the union are legally required to follow the agreement.
The collective agreement exists to promote fairness, transparency, and consistency, and to protect teachers from arbitrary or unilateral decisions. It provides a shared framework that supports safe, respectful, and sustainable teaching and learning environments.
Below we have previous and more current collective agreements. If you have questions or concerns, please feel free to contact the union office.
